Q: What is TASK & KEY?
A: TASK & KEY is a method of teaching that I utilize for all of my tutoring services. If you were intrigued by the TASK & KEY tab at the top of the page and wondered what it stood for, you came to the right page! TASK & KEY is central to my tutoring service; it is my hope and desire that it will permeate every aspect of my service, and that it will help you to learn and reach your potential!
Teamwork- The 'T' in Task & Key stands for teamwork! In order for our relationship to be a smooth, successful one, we must work together as a team! You bring your needs to the table, as well as your desire to work hard and succeed, and I will bring my knowledge, my passion, my hard work, and my desire to help you! We must communicate, work together, and desire to form the best relationship with each other we can in order to succeed! If we can't work together on this point, we're going to have a really hard time fulfilling all the other wonderful steps of TASK & KEY!
A ssess- The 'A' in Task & Key stands for assess! To start our learning process off, I typically like to assess the student in some form or another. That could be reviewing prior test scores or teacher comments on past work before a session, or asking the student questions about their course, or even assigning a practice test for the student to complete during a session. This allows me to try and pinpoint problem areas that the student may be experiencing, figure out the student's comfort level and feelings regarding the material, and develop my individualized approach to aiding the student with their work!
Study, study, study! The 'S' in Task & Key stands for study! After the initial assessment is complete, the next step is to begin studying the material the student needs to learn, as well as any additional information that is important to the overall learning effort. That may mean studying guides to a certain type of test such as an AP exam, reading information about the time period a play was written in, or digging really deeply into a textbook and studying everything in a chapter in great depth! Studying is extremely important. If you are struggling with your study skills, we will go over notetaking, critical reading, and other important skills to help you improve!
Keep it in the head! Review is an important part of the learning process; sometimes that may mean going back to review a previous chapter's content, or doing a simple quiz on the vocab terms from the current chapter. Review helps to keep important facts solidified in the mind. Each student requires a different amount of review content; for one student, review might play a heavy part in tutoring sessions, and for others, their best method of learning may be a very quick review before a speedy move-on. I will work together with the student to determine the best method of review.
Keep on learning! The 'K' in KEY stands for keep on learning! Once the review step is complete, often the next jump is to move on to more content. We'll keep on learning what it is you need to learn together!
Enter in context! Enter in relevance! The 'E' in KEY stands for enter in context & enter in relevance. What does this mean? Well, I know from personal experience with myself, friends, and others that I know that context and relevance is very important to the learning process! Often students want to know, 'What does this material have to do with me?' 'Why should I study this?' 'What does it have to do with the real world?' Those are all great questions! I may not have all the answers, but I feel that it is very important to put learning into context and relevance. For example, if we are reading classic literature together, we may look up information regarding the author, the time period the book was written in, and the nature of the life of the country & peoples at the time so that we can better speculate about the author's thought process. On the line of relevancy, that may mean trying to figure out what current professionals TODAY are doing with the subject matter, or how the subject matter can help YOU to succeed in college, trade school, career, your personal life, and beyond.
You! The 'Y' in KEY stands for YOU. Each individual is a person with their own unique desires, needs, struggles, hopes, and dreams. You are the center of the sessions, which means that I will do my best to adapt to your learning style and your individual thinking patterns. That may mean bringing in additional resources, such as flash cards and videos to help you learn, or that may mean having lengthy discussions about the books you are reading or the project you are hoping to write. Whatever the case, I will do my best to tailor sessions to meet your needs. Your needs are important to me, and I will do my best to help you succeed as much as I can!
